“I am everywhere.

I am in your breath.

I am the mirror in which you can see yourself.

I am Bhole Baba, the father who is simple.

I have come to help you, to guide you. Place your burden at my feet.

I will carry your burden.” -Babaji (Caddy 143).

“I have come to lead you to the awareness of oneness beyond duality, to dispel the disunity caused by confessions of faith, religions and castes. There is only one humanity, be human! Seek to experience in your awareness that we are all one. I want to show you a freedom beyond your perceptions, where the lions and the goat are drinking together from the same spring.” – Babaji. (Caddy 143).

Babaji taught Karma Yoga with mantra repetition as the fastest way to God in our chaotic times. He emphasized the path of selfless action in order to see god in everything and wanted his followers to see the divine in all things. He always emphasized that all peoples of the world are divine and accepted people of all religions and faiths using saints and teachers from other traditions as examples of aspects of his teachings. He embraced the world and helped remove the ego limitations of his followers. He opened numerous hospitals and social service centers in India with the help of his followers. Babaji was creating a more just world filled with universal peace guided by good will.

Many of those who came to him recall the power of his presence with floral language and deep love. Around Babaji is a feeling of unconditional love, his gaze sees into our thoughts and into our karma. He knows the best and worst parts of who you are and loves you unconditionally.  The teachings are unique for each individual and his reasoning is mysterious. He is a god realized being here to teach and guide humanity. They speak of his eyes so deep, profound and mysterious as though his gaze sees every cell in the body. They speak of blissful union with the divine and challenging lessons which delivered great spiritual rewards. Many followers devote their lives to his teachings and continue to honor their guru. They say that even though Babaji has left his material body that he still guides them and teaches them.

Shri Haidakhan Wale Babaji mysteriously appeared in June 1970 in a cave at the foot of Kumaon Mount Kailash in the Nainital district of Uttaranchal. The cave is spoken of in the Vedas as a dwelling place of the divine.  Babaji was a youth between the ages of 18 and 20 and he had no birth record or known family. He could quote Sanskrit scriptures from memory and could live with little to no food for three years at a time.  He would move into deep meditative trances for up to 45 days and radiated wisdom. Babaji has spiritual powers and could heal the sick, predict the future, read minds and bring people into relationship with the divine.

The stories of his appearance spread quickly and many came to be with Haidakhan Babaji. Those who came to him say they were summoned in visions, dreams and by synchronic events. Often Babaji would materialize in front of the person calling them to his side at the ashram in Haidakhan.  His followers included a wide range of ages and races with many western devotees. At the Ashram the devotees and visitors would bath in the river, meditate and practice karma yoga until sunset. Babaji spoke rarely and usually spoke a few words in the morning and evening Aarati (spiritual service).

Babaji said, “To follow and demonstrate the path of Truth, Simplicity and Love is man’s supreme duty and the highest yoga. Diligent work is a quality of this Path, and laziness is death on earth. Only by work can one claim victory over karma. All must strive to do their duty in the best way possible and not wander from that duty. Service to humanity is the first duty. During these times, inhumanity and laziness have increased, so it is important that you work hard and not lose heart. Be brave, be industrious, work hard and have courage.” (Haidakhandi Samaj 1990 pg. 8).

Babaji led his devotees by example. He would help serve food, help with the dishes, often he would only speak a few words a days and stay up all night meditating. He loved all who came and met all his followers where they were at in their spiritual journey. He demanded unshakable faith from his devotees. He wanted each person to keep their mind in god and love and if one was not doing their best to hold their awareness he would ask them to leave the ashram.

As with all gurus Babaji makes statements and tasks which are intended for specific individuals in order to trigger spiritual growth in the devotee. At a later time he may encourage the devotee to do the opposite of what he told them in the past. This leads to Babaji making contradictory statements often because each individual needs to hear and experience different things at different times to grow spiritually.  Sometimes lessons can seem harsh but the followers often come to a deep epiphany about why they received the challenging teaching.

Babaji once sent a western devotee home because they had lost faith. Babaji said, “You are being sent back to your country because you have lost faith. If you were a true devotee, you would have unshakable faith and a steady mind…By giving temple duties, I accepted you as a devotee…I am responsible for you and your liberation! Whatever initiation you need, I will give you. Why then should you doubt or seek elsewhere? … Your faith must be as mighty as Mount Meru. Even the sun and the moon can move from their course, but the faith of the devotee should not be shaken. A true devotee will be ready to shed their life for God and will have faith to his last breath. Never be moved by false doctrines! You are protected in every moment.” (Shyam pg 184).

Babaji could be the compassionate Shiva and could also be the harsh teacher bringing people to fully experience their limitations and their emotional limits. Babaji states,”The path of God-realization is a most difficult one. Few are those who will walk it. It is difficult as walking on the edge of a razor. The grace of the guru is everything. No knowledge is possible without the Guru.” (Shyam 184).

To keep the mind focused on God one should repeat a mantra continuously. He said all mantras are good to do but Babaji preferred ‘Om Namah Shivay’. This means “I take refuge in God” or “I surrender to you Lord”.

Babaji said, “Om namah shivay is the great original mantra, it is one with the primal sound of the creation. The power of OM namaha Shivay is infinite, it is stronger then all the atomic bombs of the world.” (Caddy 145).

He wanted to bring his followers to the essential nature of the universe and it could not be reached without continuous awareness and dedication. His devotees have to be who they truly are, they have to reach beyond their limitations to experience themselves as one with all existence. He said they must stop the cycle of karma through selfless action and awareness focused one god.

Babaji spoke of karmic law saying, “Karma is an inevitable law of cause and effect by which all living beings reap the fruits of their actions and thoughts…The law of karma is above all things. Karma starts when movement starts in the mind. To stop karma, we must bring the mind to that state of silence and voidness beyond which god can be known…Otherwise, as long as a man breaths, he is creating karma. No one can remain without action, even for a minute. Therefore, learn how to dedicate your every action to the Lord.” (Shyam 234 – 236).

The devotee Sheila asked Babaji about why he struck a man. She said, “Baba you are the lord of forgiveness; why did you do this to that man? Why not forgive the man? You shouldn’t be so angry.” Babaji replied, “Forgiveness has gone to the Himalayas! I cannot forgive that. I am bound by laws… This is to be understood: there is nobody above the law! … The law is above everything: even I am not above the law.” (Shyam 169).

Part of this law is the law of karma. It is possible that due to past actions this man could have a great deal of karma that threatens his health or his life. By the firm hand of the guru this karma can be resolved.

This type of action by Babaji drew many questions from his devotees. One of Babaji’s closest devotees, asked about non-violence, Babaji said, “I want brave and courageous people. A man must have great courage… I want a creation of brave, fearless and courageous people. I want people with a strong revolutionary spirit who are willing to fight for the truth. I want to root out the present spirit of non-violence from the world; this emphasis on non-violence has brought an increase in atrocities and injustice in the world. I do not want a world in which the rights of human beings are trampled, as the world today. This practice of non-violence has led people into ignorance, instead of leading them into knowledge. Due to this kind of non-violence, man has been deprived of his rights and he is afraid of his own shadow. I want a creation of powerful people throughout the world.” (Shyam 219).

Babaji never defined exactly what he meant with the term non-violence but did emphasis the need for action, truth, courage and the dangers of laziness. Also this term could have been used to trigger a specific association in a particular devotee. Babaji frequently made statements about the need for revolution, justice and active strength. He often suggested that simply by allowing malignant violence to occur and not standing in opposition we ourselves participate in the injustice. Babaji wanted courageous and brave followers willing to advance humanity through selfless action, Karma Yoga focused on Gods endless love.

He called for a revolution which could move humanity in the direction of global peace and divine realization. Karma Yoga, selfless action, was the ultimate path toward realization in this age.  It required unshakable faith, strength and a steady mind focused always on God. Babaji says, “…you must keep your duty before you always. We must all have one purpose before us – to sacrifice ourselves for the sake of humanity. We must live for humanity and die for humanity. We must offer our loves for the welfare and security of society. This must be our aim our bhajan. This is our bhajan, our kirtan; this is our repetition of the name. We should always proceed with this in mind.” (Shyam).

Babaji also had predictions for the future which he would spoke of many times. His predictions are of a future world filled with destruction and warned all devotees to be prepared. He said, “Be strong in the time of great revolution which is coming. No one can stop the fire coming in the world now. The bells of great destruction are already ringing. The war will be such that people sleeping will die immediately in their houses from gas, atomic and nuclear radiations.” (Haidakhan Samaj 21). He made many statements about the coming fires and storms and the death of millions of peoples.

Haidakhan Babaji left his body on Valentine’s day Feburary 14th 1984. He stated, “This body is nothing; it is here only to serve people.” (Haidakhandi Samaj 1990 pg. 9). He went through months of incredible suffering before passing. He was taking on the karma of millions breathing in the suffering of the world and exhaling love and peace. His passing was accompanied by large storms and flooding in Haidakhan. At his cremation the full moon was surrounded by rings and light appearing to devotees like a jeweled net in the sky.

Babaji became the great love of hundreds of devotees and followers. He opened their heart moved them forward in their spiritual understanding and personal development. His ability to lift devotees to transcendent heights is a great gift to the world. Many of his followers are true embodiments of karma yoga and driven passion for serving others and bettering the world.

“Seek harmony in everything you do. I am harmony.”-Babaji (Caddy 144).
